Hospice of Hancock County is a non-profit, Maine State Licensed volunteer support organization, founded in 1980. Our mission is to provide non-medical assistance to patients and families who are facing the end-of-life, support to those who grieve the loss of a loved one, and provide education and advocacy for the community on death and bereavement issues.

Hospice care is patient and family centered. We respond to individual and community needs. There are presently ninety active patient care volunteers that are organized in the community areas of Blue Hill and the peninsula, Bucksport, Ellsworth/Downeast, and Mount Desert Island. A volunteer regional coordinator manages each area. Three full and one part-time paid staff members coordinate volunteer and program activities and community outreach. Hospice of Hancock County staff and volunteers work as team members with local physicians, in-patient and residential facilities, home care organizations, churches, neighborhood organizations and schools to provide care for individuals and families. The Hospice of Hancock County office maintains an extensive lending library on end-of-life care and bereavement topics. All services are offered free of charge.

The 9 week Volunteer Patient Care Training is offered twice yearly in the spring and fall. Meeting once per week, time in training is approximately 30 hours. Please call for more information.
Wednesdays April 23 – June 18th
3:30 – 7:00 p.m. (9 Weeks)

Hospice patient care training enables men and women to help people in their community.  The goal of care is excellent quality of life for those who are nearing the end of life and their caregivers. Volunteers provide regular visits and emotional support so caregivers can take a break, do errands, make special appointments, go out for a meal with friends or take a nap. Volunteers provide companionship visits for people who reside in nursing homes or have been admitted to local hospitals. They accompany families who need support during the dying process.  To provide this care, volunteers learn about communication and support techniques, family dynamics, simple bedside care giving strategies, local resources and team care. Registration form and an interview are required.  Call 667-2531.  $35.00 registration fee.
